You are probably already aware that mobile marketing consists of marketing to people through their mobile devices. What it really is is an extension of internet marketing. With more and more people spending more time on their mobile devices and less on their computers, the move of internet marketers to mobile marketing was inevitable.

But why is mobile marketing so useful? Well, it allows you to reach your customers immediately and it is a very attractive medium for any kind of business thanks to its exceptionally high conversion rates.
However, you have to do it properly because otherwise it can damage your relationship with customers, so there are a few things you should bear in mind.

The sms has to be sent to the consumer with timing and relevancy, so that it has the best chance of driving action and not annoying anybody in the process.

call to action

The best kinds of direct marketing campaigns drive you to action, so the sms marketing messages have to tell their customers what they want them to do, and they have to say it clearly. You might even want to include a website so that smartphone users can access it immediately.

Another thing that can be very profitable to your campaign is using sms marketing software such as Vision6 in order to maintain connversations with your customers easily because these conversations aren’t captured on your mobile but within your database online.

You should also make it easy for customers to unsubscribe from the service, so make sure you include an opt out service.

And here is where landing pages come into the picture. They are one of the best ways to make a successful mobile marketing campaign and allow you to increase conversions on your Paid Media, email, banner and social media (paid) campaigns, as well as enabling you to produce more focused messages for your ad campaigns than homepages can ever acheive, meaning higher conversions.

What you have to do is create a mobile website that will serve you as a landing page and send your customers a message with a shortened landing page URL, allowing to track how many page views there are so that you can evaluate the effectiveness of your campaign.

Here are a couple of examples of mobile marketing campaigns with landing pages:

  • For Kraft Foods‘ promotion of its new Jacobs 3in1 and 2in1 instant coffee products, the company made a call to action inviting customers to ask for a product sample by texting in a media-specific keyword ass well as using print and TV adverts and online and banner ads. A list of opted-in consumers received SMS messages as well, inviting them to text-in for the sample. These consumers received a link to the mobile sampling portal. As a result, Kraft Foods received more than 400,000 sample requests and 80,000 opt-ins for future messages. It was a very successful campaign with the clickthrough rate of the banner ads on selected pages being of 3%.
  • Another campaign, in this case by the marketing company Euromoney, was launched aiming at generating as many free trials as possible for BCA research, to simplify the form completion process for recipients and to increase campaign conversions. Euromoney just wanted to encourage the customers to sign up and receive three free issues of the Euromoney financial forecast publication. The conversions were encouraged by sending the customers to a landing page and the campaign’s subject line was that you had been selected, and 11% of the targeted customers attempted to open the message and 4.4% clicked on the link. The landing pages were personalised, so customers only had to check that their details were correct because the subscription already contained their personal information.
  • To conclude I’ll say that not all brands go into mobile advertising with the right expectations. They make the mistake of running banner ads that don’t take advantage of mobile devices unique capabilities. Smartphones now come with functionalities that give advertisers more tools and options to work in mobile than they ever had before and using them correctly can indeed boost your business. So make sure to go for the right strategy when you are planning your marketing actions.
